About
တၢ်ကွၢ်ထွဲလၢအဂ့ၤ – ကညီမိၢ်ဒၢ အတၢ်ထံၣ် (Good Pregnancy Care – What Karen Women Say): A photovoice study exploring what culturally safe pregnancy care is to Karen women of refugee background in Victoria, Australia
Cultural safety is increasingly recognised as crucial in Australian maternity care, yet what constitutes culturally safe pregnancy care for women of refugee backgrounds has received very little attention to date. This study sought to extend our understanding by exploring Karen (Kah-REN) women’s perspectives on cultural safety within their experiences of pregnancy care in Victoria, Australia.
တၢ်ကွၢ်ထွဲလၢအဂ့ၤ – ကညီမိၢ်ဒၢ အတၢ်ထံၣ် (Good Pregnancy Care – What Karen Women Say) is a community-based participatory research project, bringing together the expertise of the Intergenerational Health group at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, the Stronger Futures Centre of Research Excellence, and The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture (Foundation House). Central to our study design was the engagement of a Karen community researcher and the establishment of a Karen community advisory group, guiding study design and conduct throughout the research process.
- Learn about how community-based participatory research principles and photovoice methods were employed in a cross-cultural study
- Understand what culturally safe pregnancy care is to Karen women of refugee background in Australia
- Discover practical strategies to increase opportunities for women of refugee background and their care providers to form genuine relationships that enhance feelings of safety and belonging.
