Education review and online medication training for nurses and midwives
Improving Value in Healthcare
About
A review of medication safety education for nurses and midwives identified significant gaps within existing training approaches. Educational content was outdated, reflecting legacy paper-based medication charts rather than contemporary electronic medication management systems. Delivery was fragmented and siloed, with limited organisational visibility of staff participation and completion.
To address these challenges, outdated modules were retired and replaced with a structured, contemporary programme. A two-part, annual online medication safety assessment was developed, incorporating key organisational medication safety principles alongside medication calculation competencies tailored to three clinical cohorts: women’s, neonatal and paediatric services. The programme is delivered via a centralised learning management system, enabling comprehensive monitoring through a mandated training dashboard.
Implementation of the revised programme has strengthened organisational oversight, improved accessibility, and enhanced accountability. Within three months of rollout, training completion rates increased from 20% to 68%, demonstrating a substantial improvement in staff engagement and compliance with medication safety education requirements.
