Aligning the implementation of gestational diabetes guidelines with women’s lived experience
Safety and Quality in Maternity Care
Zoom Meeting
About
This presentation explores how gestational diabetes (GDM) guidelines align with women’s lived experiences of maternity care, with a focus on psychosocial impacts and the role of internalised and experienced stigma. It highlights implications for improving person-centred and empathic maternity care.
Key take-home messages:
- GDM care can significantly affect women’s emotional wellbeing, sense of agency, and birth experiences
- Diabetes and weight stigma may shape experiences of screening, diagnosis, clinical interactions, and longer-term healthcare engagement
- Integrating psychosocial and stigma-aware approaches into care pathways can improve maternity care experiences
- Maternity care experiences may influence ongoing health engagement and represent an important opportunity to support sustained health behaviours and long-term risk reduction (e.g., of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease)
