Presenters:
Dr Ju-Lee Oei
Ju-Lee has extensive research and clinical expertise in the resuscitation of sick newborns, and in the care of mothers, babies and families affected by drugs of addiction and dependency. Recently appointed as Chair of Neonatology at Mater, she works across Mater Mothers’ hospitals and Mater Research to advance healthcare outcomes for mothers and babies. She has also authored more than 190 scientific papers and mentored more than 70 students and neonatal trainees. Currently, she is the Chief Investigator of the NHMRC-funded TORPIDO 3060 Study, and has led an international resuscitation research group for over six years, influencing national and global neonatal resuscitation guidelines.

Targeted Oxygen for Initial Resuscitation of Preterm Infants

NICU and Special Care Nurseries

Zoom Meeting

About

The optimal concentration of oxygen to initiate respiratory support of preterm infants at birth is still a highly controversial topic, yet critical to optimising infant care. In the 1990s, 100% oxygen was abandoned and replaced with 21% oxygen, then later increased to 30% oxygen. However, given limited research, the most effective level for resuscitation of preterm newborns is still uncertain.

The TORPIDO 30/60 Randomised Clinical Trial, conducted across six countries, aimed to seek some clarity around the optimality of oxygen levels in order to improve safety and quality of care in the NICU. Newborns were randomly assigned to a 30% or 60% oxygen condition, and outcomes focused on death and brain injury at 36 weeks.

The study found no significant differences in primary outcomes of death and brain injury between groups. Dr Oei will discuss the study, explore its implications on future practice and research, and emphasise the continued need to answer this fundamental question.
