Data for Maternity Excellence (Data4ME)

WHA datasets provide a rich source of insight for service and clinical leaders eager to enhance care and outcomes for women & newborns. This data is now accessible 24/7.

Maternity services across Australia are choosing to share data with each other through WHA to help them identify areas of strength and opportunity to further improve care and outcomes for women and their newborns.

WHA holds data on more than 860,000 births which are now accessible to all members through a secure digital portal hosted in PowerBI.

The portal contains a range of dashboards aimed at supporting comparative analysis of performance, trends, and how we might optimise outcomes for women with common medical and/or obstetric characteristics.

There are two main types of data presented.

1.  Operational benchmarking data:, which helps to assess

  • overall trends in demand for maternity, newborn and women’s healthcare to help with anticipating future workforce & skillmix needs
  • comparative profiles women’s health services, including gynaecology and mental health, to help with identifying opportunities to enhance the value of local services for similar women
  • comparative cost and cost saving opportunities
  • comparative workforce resources
2.  Clinical benchmarking data, which helps to assess:
  • trends clinical maternity care and outcomes
  • variation in clinical care and/or outcomes across similar services caring for similar women
  • opportunities to enhance outcomes for women with common medical or obstetric presentations or needs
  • compliance with recommended national standards of care, such as the Safer Baby Bundle

WHA is continually developing the portal in consultation with members to enhance the value of the data being shared by member services.
