Maternity Connect Program - 7 July 2021 at 12:30pm (AEST)
The focus of this web conference is on the Maternity Connect Program, based in Victoria supporting midwives in smaller health services develop and maintain their clinical skills.
Many women in rural areas express a desire to receive maternity care and give birth close to home. Nevertheless, rural and remote health services may not always be able to meet the needs of pregnant women. Challenges faced by health services in rural and remote areas include limited clinical exposure for midwives as a result of small services, and difficulties in providing education and continuing professional development for midwives.
Maternity Connect is a clinical exposure program based in Victoria that focuses on supporting midwives working in smaller health services around the state develop and maintain their clinical skills. The program supports rural health services to identify areas of key priorities for their maternity workforce and then facilitates targeted midwifery placements in larger services, ideally within the same region and/or next referral pathway.
Midwives that participate in the program report increased confidence in providing maternity care closer to home. An evaluation of the program found that 93.8% of participants reported they had achieved all or some of their learning objectives during their placement and 83.3% reported that they had been able to practice what they had learnt or some of what they had learnt on placement when they returned to their base health service.
