Leading Thinkers Series Web Conference Part 2: Reducing Organic Waste - 28 October, 12:30pm (AEDT)
There is a common misconception that reducing hospital waste and providing safe quality care is an either/or choice.
While it is important to safely dispose of hazardous waste such as radioactive, toxic materials or contaminated used PPE, in the case of infectious diseases like Covid-19, according to WHO only 15% of healthcare waste is categorised as“hazardous”(link is external). Focusing on the non-hazardous 85% this is where hospitals can reduce their waste.
When we think of reducing hospital waste, rarely do we think about food and other organic waste. This web conference focuses on innovative strategies that hospitals have used to reduce their organic waste.
Hear from Monika Page, the sustainability manager at Royal Melbourne Hospital, about organic waste reduction strategies at Melbourne Health. This includes their award-winning program partnering with OzHarvest to reduce hospital food waste and hunger in the community .
