Improving Value in Healthcare Series: New Builds - Design, Challenges, Successes and Move in Day - 14 July 2021 at 12:30pm (AEST)
The Focus of this web conference is on the design, challenges and sucesses of building the Joan Kirner Women's and Children's Hospital (JKW&CH) in Melbourne.
Joan Kirner Women's and Children's Hospital (JKW&CH) was opened in May 2019 to meet the demand for world-class maternity and paediatric services in Melbourne’s west.
But we all know that New Hospitals Builds certainly starts years and years before construction begins.
- Population profile
- How the Hospital services functions with key services(NICU) and surrounding services
- Concept Design, master plan
- Consultation and more consultation with consumer, clinicians etc
- Schematic Design – patient flow, etc
- Arts & Cultural consideration
Corbett Lyon the Architect a leading advocate of salutogenic hospital design, maximised views out to nature, as both a means to orientate patients and visitors, but also to help lower anxiety and stress levels.
The result is a hospital that beautifully balances its clinical requirements with exceptional design. “Whilst it is fundamentally a place of caring and the provision of health services, it is also full of comforting finishes, colours, artworks and vistas — all of which are designed to honour patients and care givers alike.”
New builds also provide a unique opportunity to reflect on Maternity Models of Care and possible service innovations. Reflecting on the “we always do it this way” perspective.
Especially considering it also includes western suburbs with it first ever NICU, 20 maternity delivery rooms, 237 beds, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics
We have the truly unique opportunity to learn from the challenges and success of the Joan Kirner Women & Children Hospital.
Erin Casey, Senior Operations Project Officer, was involved in the $200 million build and will be able to give us insight into:
- What they would do differently and
- What was unexpected and
- What they did not think they needed to ask?
