About

Perinatal mental health describes the mental health and emotional wellbeing of parents, from conception until two years after the end of pregnancy. Within 12 months of delivering a baby in Queensland, 1.3% of mothers will contact emergency services with perinatal suicidality.
It is indisputable that Perinatal mental illness is a known risk to maternal-infant attachment and healthy infant development, Therefore it is important identify parents at risk of mental health issues, and support them, as early as possible.

Infant mental health describes the emotional wellbeing of infants and young children from conception to age three. Infant mental health refers to the infant’s ability to experience, express and manage emotions, form close and secure relationships with parents and caregivers and explore their environment and learn about the world. The relationship between the infant and their parent or primary caregiver is central to the infant’s emotional wellbeing.

The Queensland Centre for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health(link is external) (QCPIMH) was established to support the development of a perinatal and infant mental health cross-sectoral continuum of care from promotion and prevention through early intervention to treatment and recovery, with a key focus on:

  • Service development and pathways to care – culturally sensitive
  • Workforce development
  • E-PIMH telepsychiatry
  • Mental health promotion and awareness raising
  • Research and evaluation
  • Advocacy
  • Birdie’s Tree – a suite of resources to help children and their families prepare for, cope with and recover from a natural disaster or disruptive event

The Queensland Centre for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health delivers clinical and family support services to infants, young children and their families, across Brisbane and Pine Rivers in Queensland. In addition, the Centre provides cross-sector support for the development of a state-wide continuum of care for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health.
